My backup server has a virtual tape drive attached, and I need to find a backup solution that will allow me to backup my VMs directly to the tape. I really like vranger, but it does not have that option. Looks like not many do have this option at all.
I also cannot backup to disk then dump to tape because i do not have the incredible amount of disk space required to do that.
Hi mate,
We are a HP shop so therefore use HP Dataprotector, VEEAM Backup - and the associated VCB scripts...
Let me know if you want some config details etc.

Veeam + VCB allows you to backup directly to tape?
Veeam + VCB allows you to backup directly to tape?
No: Veeam (but also vRanger and other similar products) is a B2D solution, VCB is a simple proxy.
You need and additional program to do B2T.
Also ntbackup could work.

the problem is I do not have available disk space to back up all VMs to disk and THEN to tape. I need to go directly to tape. Is there any solution where this is possible?
If your VM are Windows, you can try to use VCB with filelevel mode.
You can "mount" your vmdk file without copy them on disk and you can backup to tape.
Check on VCB documentation.
