Logging onto ESX host with Domain Account

Hi,

Is it possible to logon to an ESX Host through VI Client using a domain account?

I just added my domain account as an Administrator for an ESX host (Right Click Host - Select Add Permission - Select Add - Select Domain from drop down menu - Found Account - Add Administrator Permissions.

Now when I try to login with the account I'm getting bad username/password message.

Has anyone come across this issue before?

Thanks in Advance,

PM

You'll need to do more configurations on the Service Console to allow for Active Directory lookup/auth, please take a look at this article to get your started: http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/resources/582

There are other good documents on the web but I don't recall which ones, you can probably also do a search on the forums too.

Thanks for the replies guys..

However I'm still having problems connecting with my AD account.

I did the following:

  1. Logon to ESX host via Putty with ROOT account

  2. Ran the following command, placing DC server name and domain name in the appropriate places.

    1. /usr/sbin/esxcfg-auth --enablead

    2. addomain=MyDomainNameHere.com

    3. addc=MYDCNameHere.MyDomainNameHere.com

    4. --krb5realm=MyDomainNameHere.com

    5. --krb5kdc=MYDCNameHere.MyDomainNameHere.com

    6. --krb5adminserver=MYDCNameHere.MyDomainNameHere.com

    7. --krb5enable (This command was in the step by step but doesn't seem to work for me)

  3. Add a user from active directory that will be allowed to login to the ESX server.

    1. /usr/sbin/useradd MYADACCOUNTNAME (Note: I did not enter domainname\username here)

After completing the above steps I tried to logon to the ESX Host via VI client using the AD account I added and it failed.

Any further suggestions guys.

Thanks in advance,

PM
