Is it possible the array is still formatting the LUN? I sometimes see this when that is happening.

I don't think so. The SAN admin made the luns available last week. He is on vacation now

Any ESX commands to refresh or reformat the lun? thx

#esxcfg-mpath -l | more (list vmhba's)

#esxcfg-rescan vmhba# (number is hba - 3, 4, 5 etc....).

With the VI Client, click on one of your ESX Hosts.

Go to Configuration

Click on Storage Adapters

Click on each of your storage adapters and then click the blue "Rescan..." link above it to the right.

Check both boxes if not already checked and hit OK.

Then go back to add storage, it will be there.

*NOTE* You do not have to add storage to your other ESX hosts. Simply rescan on all HBAs and then do a refresh on the storage.

Hope this helps.

If the LUN was made up out of disks that used to contain a file system and it is not zeroed out, ESX could read this and potentially cause problems.

Use fdisk to see if there are any partions on the drive, if there are delete them and try to add storage again.

"fdisk /dev/sdb" to start fdisk

"p" to print partition table on the disk

"d" to delete partition

"w" to write changes to disk

Let us know if it already sees a partition on the disk.

If the lun shows up under the HBA, but not for add storage, it may already be formatted with some other fs type. Run fdisk to verify.
