Is there any way to get inotify working on ESX Server 3?

I'm trying to run inotify on ESX server 3. However, since inotify requires a kernel version 2.6 or greater (to the best of my knowledge) this hasnt been possible.

Does anyone know of a way to

a) Upgrade the COS kernel version to 2.6.x without disrupting vmkernel operations

b) Get inotify running on the existing kernel

You're not going to be able to modify the kernel for the service console without breaking ESX. This link will give you the approximate console versions. If you're looking for alternative, there is a VMware virtual applicance you can download that can monitor your server (2nd link)
