Is this for backing up the ESX Host itself...not for backing up VM's? If so, I think it is pretty accepted practice around here that it is much easier to either do a clean install of ESX ( takes about 20 minutes) or take a little time and setup a scripted install of ESX with your environment setup to roll out rather than spend time and space backing up the ESX server when it is so easy to re-create.

I'm sure others have varying opinions, so I'm sure we will hear a few!

This would be used to back up the VMDK's files. so we have a backup just incase we loose the esx server.

Thx

Hi,

after extraction, you have to start the ./installralus command and after that follow the instruction.

Look for more info on this site:

Good Luck,

Works great on my servers.

Once you have the be_agent.tar in a directory under the /tmp directory, type the following command to extract the file: tar -xvf be_agnt.tar. Then change into the directory and type ./INSTALL to start the installation of the agent.

I have installed the agent and modified the hosts files on both Media and the host server. I can ping teh media server from the ESX server and I can ping the ESX from the media server. I do not see the ESX host from the backup exec.

Thx

I thought I had it working also, but I don't. I just open the firewall ports thru VC and just restart the agent on the ESX host. I don't see the Unix/Linux option within Backup Exec. Do you have any other ideas how we can resolve this? Also, which version are you using?

Which version of Backup Exec are you running? I will go ahead and reboot my ESX 3.0.1 server.

we are running veritas 9.1 and testing 11d. I have rebooted my ESX server and waiting for a call back from veritas.

I am currently running 11d and I have the Backup Exec 8.x and 9.x Agent for Unix installed and I still don't see anything. I bet we are missing some small piece here. Let me know what Veritas says.

Thanks,

Michael

Two things.. as my guide shows..

1.

You have to use the old 9x linux agent and not the new one, there is a link i my guide

2.

you have to "export" the VMFS folder, see my guide where i have include the agent.cfg file

Yes, but you have to export the running VM's to a folder first and then backup that folder

if yes have you problems with the restore from tape

to vmfs?

No it is running fine, again you have to do the import/export thing.
