Infrastructure Update (update vs manager)

So I have "VMware Infrastruture Update", not the fancy "Update Manager". The "Update" utility does not see this patch, and when I try to add it (Add Files) it doesn't work. So other than reading the long PDF of how to ftp the update, extract, bla bla, what other option am I left with?

Why doesn't the update utility work?

Hello,

You should be able to use teh VIC to access any patches. I have the same and use the VIC to update all my systems. Seems to work just fine.

How did you access this screen? ANd what ESX version are you trying to update?

This error typically occurs when you try to mixup ESX and ESXi patches

Are you sure you d/l the patches for your correct ESX flavor ?

direct d/l link are available here:

Yes, I'm sure I have the correct patch, because I found a way around it.

I have ESX 3.5 U2. Since no one is able to come up with a solution, i have found my own.

1. Unzip the package

2. Logon to the Infrastructure Client, goto configuration - storage.

3. Upload the unziped folder to a datastore

4. Goto the main console of the server (Alt-F1) and login as root.

5. Type "cd /vmfs/volumes/{name of your volume}/{name of your folder}"

6. Then run the update "esxupdate update"

This is very simple, you don't need to read a PDF book, you don't ftp software, you dont need any update manager.

Hello,

I have the same problems as creator of this thread. I can use update from VI client only for ESXi host. ESX 3.5 I can patch only via esxupdate from COS or via Update Manager on Virtual Center server.

Do you use update from VI client for ESX 3.5 hosts too?

Thank you for your experiences!!!!

Infrastructure Update is a tool for updating ESX 3i hosts only.
