INQUIRY EVPD DEVICE ID failed V 3.0.2

Hello,

I am new user, and try to install in a test machine. I retried today with V3.0.2, and I have the same error I had with V3.0.1

I made sure that I followed the HCL, and I have

The right Intel board, The right Adaptec controler, in Mirror,

I managed to install except the VMFS3 does not show up.

It is partitioned in SAD3 I checked using the appropriated command fdsk etc... and it is around 140GB.

But When the system tries to mount /sda3/vmfs3 in the boot sequence, there is an error. Even if I look using vdh -l, the same error occurs.

Anyone has an IDEA... I am really confused here !

Regards.

J.

What Adaptec controller do you use?

According to the logs the disks are NOT mirrored.

Adaptec 39320A Ultra 320 Firmaware just updated to latest V4.30

Still the same problem.

If I go the the Adaptec BIOS, I see the disk are Mirrored.

Also in the boot sequence, I have this

Startng VMware late init tools \[ok]

Loading VMkernel module VMFS2 \[ok]

could not open '/vmfs/volumes'.

Error : no such file or directories

Restoring NAS volume Error performing operation : SysinfoException: NodeId(212) ; status(195887107) = Not Found; Message = Unable to get instance list

Restoring S/W iScsi volumes \[ok]

Well

1) I dont have iScsi volumes, just plain Seagate on an Adaptec

2) I just boot in trouble shooting and create the directory /vmfs/volumes... The error complaining about could not open disapeared, but all other errors about Device ID and NAS volume Error remains

3) something I forgot to mentioned, I cannot log on the console after all this. I have the message

Loading Module vmfs2 ....

Module Loaded successfully

and it hangs there.

I am able to VirtualInfrastructure Client for my hostname, and see that there is no datastore present

Hum...

Ok,

1) I updated the Firmware of the Adaptec controler.

2) I deleted the mirror, and recreated a Raid 1

1 hour later, I reinstall from the CD, When comes the time to choose on which disk to install, the installation process proposes me the 2 seagates drive I have /sda or / sdb.

Is it normal. Should it not proposed only the Raid ?

Maybe that is the problem no ? Since it is my first installation I cannot relate to what is normal or not.

Can u provide feedback.

Regards

J.

This seems to be your problem.

ESX doesn't recognize the RAID.

OK I decided to change the Controler. I used a

SCSI RAID 2200S from Adaptec rather than a 39320A Ultra 320 SCSI

I realized reading some other atricles in the KB that even if the Controler appears on the compatibility list, and that the device is RAID capable, it does not make it a candidate for a VMFS partition. It must be explicitly identify as RAID as a device model in the IO Compatibility Guide.

I must admit the documentation could be clearer !!!! I would have save me 8 hours of frustration.

Tks anyway.
