How does the Console OS VM access the physical hardware?

I'm trying to understand the Console a little more.

Once the Console OS is relaunched as a VM, how are the local /swap, /etc, /var /vmcore etc.... partitions accessed? Is it through a virtual mapping through the VMkernel?

For basic understand you should read this:

http://www.vi3book.com/

These people wrote the book on VI (literally).

There is a book out right now, that covers 2.5 ESX, but it gives you a basic understanding of how ESX works.

I have read the 2.5 book, but it still doesn't explain this part thouroughly other then that it is relaunced as a VM.

Plus, the 2.5 and 3.0 are different (obviously) but in either case, I do not know how the physical hardware is accessed from the console OS - unless it is similar to an RDM type mapping via the vmkernel.
