How can I troubleshoot a problem of compatibility / hardware ??

Hi,

I "won" the management of our esx 3.x servers. So far, there was a skilled collegue who used to manage this but he left.

I was able to maintain the system up to now ( only reboots, change ethernet networks ...so not very difficult ) but I have a new problem : We need to migrate an application and I need to validate that it is working under Vmware.

It's an appliance product, so I asked for the ISO, that I got. the OS is a FreeBsd modified.

When I try to boot from this CD, it hangs after trying to boot. I downloaded a Generic version of Freebsd and it s working.

So, how can I troubleshoot and find the exact problem ? are there any tips ? I read some infos on the forum like " just rename the ethernet interface name from iz0 to eth0 etc..", are there any tips I need to know to rename something in the vmware .ini ? where? how ?

thanks in advance ?
