HP SIM Install - Help

I am trying to install the hpmgmt-7.7.0-vmware3x.tgz hp management agents on ESX 3.0.1

I am using sitescope to capture these snmp traps. Can someone help with questions I have about the installation?

My sitescope IP is xx.xx.xx.xx

DNS name is sitescope.company.com

Here is the input I provide when it asks me the series of questions:

For accessing the System Managament Homepage, the port for hpim service (2381)

should be enabled in the firewall.

Do you want to enable this port? <y/n> (default is y) y

Enabling the port for hpim service (2381) in the firewall \[ OK ]

For adding the HP Systems Insight Manager Certificate in SMH, the port \[280]

should be enabled in the firewall.

Do you want to enable this port? <y/n> (default is y) y

Enabling the port \[280] in the firewall \[ OK ]

HP Advanced Server Management configuration:

Welcome to the hp System Health Application and Insight Management Agent(hpasm)

package installation. This package contains the hp Advanced Server Management

Application(hpasmd) and hp's SNMP agents. This package is intended to only

function on hp servers with either the ProLiant ASM (0x0E11A0F2) ASIC or the

ProLiant iLO Advanced Server Management (0x0E11B203) ASIC.

Do you wish to continue? <y/n> (blank is y) y

==============================================================================

NOTE: Your SNMP stack can load the 32-bit hp ProLiant Management Extension.

Problems may result from using your distribution's SNMP stack.

See hp Documentation (HOWTO, agent manual) for more details.

==============================================================================

Press any key to continue...

The startup scripts in this package also control the loading of modules in

this and other hp management packages(i.e. hprsm). Some of those management

modules are distributed under a non-GPL license. When these non-GPLed modules

are loaded the kernel's tainted flag (see /proc/sys/kernel/tainted) may be

set. If you choose not to load them, some management functionality will be lost.

Do you want to load the hp modules even though they may "taint"

your kernel? <y/n> (Blank is y) y

This package contains data gathering agents that provide data to clients via

SNMP. This SNMP data may be used by other hp management software. If you

choose not to start these agents that data may not be provided. Answer 'y'

to this question to start the base set of agents. You will be prompted for

the more specialized Storage and Performance agents.

Agent Startup Policy

Do you require SNMP agents (y/n) ? (Blank is y): y

Storage Agent Startup Policy

Do you require Storage Agent support (y/n) ? (Blank is y): n

Performance Agent Startup Policy

Do you require performance agent support (y/n) ? (Blank is y): y

You will now be asked a series of SNMP configuration questions. How you answer

these question will affect the way SNMP behaves. Configuring SNMP could have

security implications on your system. If you are not sure how to answer a

question, you can abort by pressing <Ctrl-c> and no changes will be made to

your SNMP configuration.

Enter the localhost SNMP Read/Write community string

(one word, required, no default): sitescope.company.com

Re-enter the same input to confirm: sitescope.company.com

The default is public, or private, but it is typically something you change ( for security reasons ); kind of like a password. This will already be defined on your management server and you should match it. Depending on your management server you will also need to import and/or compile the HP MIBS so that you can translate the event codes sent between your hosts and the management server into meaningful alerts that are human readable. HP SIM, if used, will do this for you.

Hello,

There may be more issues but I found the following right away:

Enter the localhost SNMP Read/Write community string

(one word, required, no default): sitescope.company.com <- this should be the snmp community name not the management server

Re-enter the same input to confirm: sitescope.company.com <- this should be the snmp community name not the management server

ACCEPTED: inputs match!

Localhost SNMP Read Only community strings are already known.

Do you wish to change it (y/n) (Blank is n): n

Enter Read/Write Authorized Management Station IP or DNS name

(Blank to skip): <- this is where your management server should be listed ( sitescope.company.com )

Hey,

If you rerun the install you can asnwer all the questions again.

Here is a pretty basic one:

dlmod cmaX /usr/lib/libcmaX.so

rwcommunity rwcommunityname 127.0.0.1

rocommunity public localhost

rwcommunity rwcommunityname rw.management.server.name.com

rocommunity public

trapcommunity public

trapsink localhost

syscontact admin@somedomain.com

syslocation someroom

I guess I am confused by the rwcommunityname.

Is this usually "Public" ?

Warning --- possibly: I have a case open with VMware and although it hasn't been pinpointed yet, the HP 'Storage' agents in particular could be the root cause of a service console VM crash we experienced recently. Will post more later as the case progresses and as VMware continues to analyze the vm-support output I'm sending them. (HP SIM 7.8 agents on ESX 3.0.2, running on DL360 G5 hardware, with Qlogic dual-port HBA, by the way).
