Guest slowdown issue.

if this is the wrong group lemme' know and I'll move it

We have a problem with XP guests where they just kind of grind to a halt for a few seconds. For instance sending a simple text email on OL2k7 can sometimes take 15-40 seconds. Originally we thought maybe the network between esx and the nfs share where the vmdk's were stored was the culprit. So we moved a few vm's to fiber channel storage but it persists. On the guest nics we don't see a whole lot of traffic and although we see steady traffic on the vmkernel nic we don't really see anything that could be saturating the connection. It's one of those things that's not a showstopper but my boss just won't stop bitching about it.

What's a good place to start diagnosing this?

First thing what is the configuration of your ESX Host - memory, CPUs, nics, type of storage DAS, NAS or SAN? - Second what is the configurations of your XP VMs = # vCPU, memory, VMware tools installed, # of VMs on your host?

Does the event occur at the same time each day?

Does this even occur on all VM's at the same time?

weinstein5,

Pretty small setup, two Dell 2900's, each w/ (2) quad core Xeon 2.6ghz cpu, 32 gigs ram, 6 gigabit nics, (2) fiber channel card. Our storage is split between a half terabyte emc storage formatted vmfs (both esx servers access it) and a 700 gig nfs share.

Typical guests are one cpu, 2 gigs ram, 20-40 gig disk, vmware tools installed, access is via rdp.

Generally there's 12-19 guests of various os's per server.

Typically no, we've tried to pin that down but can't find a common time or correlation to when it happens.

No. Although once when we were copying a vmdk at the same time we were cloning a template on nfs all the guests on that datastore slowed down. This is when we started moving some of our more active guests to direct attached vmfs but it didn't seem to help.
