Getting ESX 3.5 to work on Dell R200's SATA CDROM

Hi all,

Has anyone succeeded in running ESX 3.5 fully running on the Dell R200? I was able to install the server, but I couldn't get the SATA CDROM drive to be made available for use by virtual hosts.

I understand that ESX 3.0 has issues with SATA, but this should be resolved in 3.5? Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks.

Hi there,

The Dell R200 does not seem to be included in the hardware Compatibility guide?

See link attached below:

Yes I have read that R200 is not officially supported. I am however curious as to how is it that I can install ESXi 3.5 via the same CDROM drive nonetheless? Or is it that VMWare needs a specialised driver for that used in R200, before it can be made available as a virtual resource?

Hi FooJH,

Have you tried the different options available to map a CDROM to a VM?

See picture attached below with the options

Thanks. You've been very helpful. Your method is the one I've been using to upload and install VMs to date. I'm just hoping to use the server's own CDROM as an additional resource.

It seems to me that the simple answer to my question is:

The SATA CDROM for R200 is not natively supported by the current release of ESX. Use an alternative method instead until a new release deals with it.

What model of SATA controller is the CD-ROM attached to?
