Does anyone have any recomendations on how much free disk space should be left to run about 35 virtual machines all running Windows XP Pro on an ESX server after all of the VM's are created? Are their processes that ESX server runs where it needs to have available disk space that is not currently in use? Thanks!
usually when you have a huge number of VM, you shouldn't run it on a single data store or LUN unit which reduce the performance. In order to prevent interruption, you require to reserve the necessary space for the swap file grow on each datastore. You need to plan with the environment specifically.
You also have to calculate if you're going to use snapshots.
While the default .vmdk file already has its final size, regardless of how much space is used from within the guest, snapshots grow based on the usage of the disk as long as they are used.

you will also need to leave space for each vm's vswp file, everytime you power on a vm it creates a swap file the size of the vm's currently allocated memory
Hi
I would agree with the 10-20%
Look at this thread where it was discussed to some depth:
