Extracting VMFS file descriptor for VMFS and VMFSSPARSE

Is there a way to extract VMFS file descriptor of VMDK type: vmfs and vmfssparse?

I'm looking for the linux version (not windows .exe format).

I got the perl program from oreeh in the forum, but it requires monolithic.

Thanks.

You don't need any program to extract them.

The only disk format with an embedded descriptor is the monolithicSparse format.

The descriptor for VMDKs with a createtype of vmfs is in the separate descriptor file.

This is the short VMDK (without the -flat part in the filename).

Oreeh, just the man I need!

Say if you loose the vmdk descriptor file and only have the vmdk disk file (with type vmfs or vmfsSparse), then what you do? Does it mean "game over"?

You are not lost.

Either create the descriptor from the latest log (if you have one) or create a new disk of the same size (use vmkfstools) and use the descriptor from that disk (after the required modifications).
