Esx 3.5.0 317866 There are not enough licenses to perform the operation

Hi!

We haven't changed anything in our virtual environment for 2months. And now when I tried to power on a virtual machine I got the error

"There are not enough licenses to perform the operation"

If I understood correctly there was a bug in some earlier releases that should be fixed by now.

Under the hosts configuration and Licenced Features I have ESX Server edition as Unlicensed.

Then I click edit and choose ESX Server Standard and click OK.

But the ESX Server edition still remains as Unlicensed.

In the VMware license server tools everything seems to be fine. (As far as I can see)

Below you have the License Manager Status

Checked out all of the steps in this article and everything seems to be in order

kb.vmware.com/kb/7114568

It just doesn't work.

You probably already checked this, but make sure that where it shows the license server in VC, it does not say "not found."  If so, Edit, change nothing, OK.  And it may then reconnect.  This happens quite a lot in one of our bad bandwidth locations.

Thanks for the good suggestion but the server part only shows the ip-address. I have clicked edit and then ok. No difference.

In this case the vc works as license server and is running as a virtual machine on one of the hosts that are "Unlicensed"

The strangest thing that I forgot to mention is that in the licens server tool vmotion licenses are in use.

And vmotion also seems to work.

I'm just not allowed to power on a virtual machine.

So how can some of the licenses work but not others..

Can you check  the "Server Diags" to see if something wrong?

Can't say what the server diagnostics should say.

But here are the results

Seems no error for license server.

What's the VC version your are using?

You may need to stop the license server and start again then edit the license edition under Host->Configuration.

VC 2.5.0 119598

I have stopped and started the license server several times, and also booted the VC several times.

And edited the License Edition several times. After pressing ok it always comes back as "Unlicensed"

Amazing, it suddenly works.

I thought ok I will once again edit the server source and then edit the license edition.

I now edited the license source and it started working.

Observe! it was the third time today that I edited the License Source. And I didn't do any changes this time either.

Just edit and then pressed Ok

Thank you very much for all of your good suggestions.
