Errors while changing pref. path

Hey folks,

I'm running every sunday 4am a script which load balance the

path over all HBAs through VIMA.

In my env. are about 100 LUNs. Unfourtunatly I receive errors.

Unable to set policy: Error during the configuration of the host: Error interacting with configuration file /etc/vmware/esx.conf: Failed attempting to lock file. Another process has locked the file for more than 10 seconds. The process holding the lock is /usr/bin/perl%00-w%00/usr/sbin/esxcfg-boot%00-o%00 (8953). This operation will complete if it is run again after the lock is released.

Unable to set policy: Error during the configuration of the host: SysinfoException: Node (VSI_NODE_storage_scsi_adapter_channel_target_lun_multipathing_path_preferred) ; Status(bad0004)= Busy; Message= Unable to Set

Hi,

This error message usually occurs when you try to use host

configuration. The esx.conf file has been locked for more than ten seconds by

the initrd regen process, causing other processes to fail

until the process has completed. To resolve this error, wait 30 seconds and attempt the operation

again.

In your case what is happening is that you are attempting to change the Multipath policy which requires update to esx.conf file, but the esx.conf file has been locked by the esxcfg-boot process which is responsible for initrd regeneration on ESX server. Hope this explains.

Thanks,

Samir

I recieve the error as well on occasion when running the Netapp config_mpath script int he Netapp ESX Host Utity kit which also changes prefered path. If I vmotion away busy servers which are running on the host in question the script finishes without issues.
