Hi
Over the holiday period I downloaded the latest 3i Eval ESX 3i 3.5.0 Build 67921 from https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?eval=vi3
Installed ESX and Virtual Center however I noticed the install was a default install with no options to change or access to a shell on the host. The licence server / files are again auto configured when installing Virtual Center.
I could access both the Host and Virtual Center using the VI client but was unable to use PuTTy
Everything else appears fine. Lockdown mode is disabled, Network test are OK and I can see the VMWare services running in the Virtual Center.
I have created a new user but there is no option to "Grant Shell Access"
The licence details below states it provides full functionality, so any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Before purchasing and activating licenses for your ESX Server 3.5 and
VirtualCenter 2.5, you can install and run evaluation modes of the software. When run
in evaluation mode, intended for demonstration and evaluation purposes, your
ESX Server and VirtualCenter are completely operational immediately after
installation, do not require any licensing configuration, and provide full functionality
of ESX Server and VirtualCenter for 60 days from the time you first activate them.
When run in evaluation mode, VirtualCenter can support a maximum allowed number
of clients and ESX Server hosts.
During the 60‐day trial, the software notifies you of the time remaining until the
evaluation mode expires.
v3i does not have a service console so there is nothing to PuTTy into, to manage these devices you need to download the RCLI client there is one for Windows and Linux, there is also a Virtual Appliance that does the same job,
you can find them here

Hi,
as far a s i know is ESX 3i only the VMkernel. So there is no Service Console to log on and as a matter of that no ssh-daemon.
To configure use the Vi Client or the VMWare Infrastructure Remote CLI http://www.vmware.com/download/download.do?downloadGroup=VI-RCLI.
Mor information under http://www.vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/vi3_esx3i_i_35_vc25_rel_notes.html
Hope that helps,
Reinhard.
