ESX host unresponsive in Virtual Center, services "dead but PID exists"

ESX 3.5 host build 123630 many services on host including vpxa and sshd are non-responsive show as "dead but PID exists" or "dead but subsys locked". All VMs still running but cannot be migrated off because VC sees host as not responding. This is the second host that has done this to us in the last few days. Do any of the next rev of updates address this issue?

vpxa and sshd are supporting services, and are not critical to your ESX health. Run a stop and start of the services, 'service vmware-vpxa stop', 'service vmware-vpxa start'.

Restart hostd, 'service mgmt-vmware restart'.

Is this server boot from SAN? Did it lose connectivity?
