ESX Memory Requirments

Hi, the spec of ESX starter states on the vm price list "limited to servers with up to 4 physical cpu's upto 8gb physical memory. Does this refer to the entire host machine meaning it can can be 8gb only or does this mean an virtual machine can only go to 8gb. For example IF i HAVE A hp dl380 WITH 12gb memory, can I allocate say 4GB to ESX, and then 4GB to each of two Windows 2003 servers runnign on it, just for example.

Or is it the total limit is 8GB and therefore in the same example i would have to allocate say 2GB to ESX, then say 4GB to one Windows server and 2GB to the other?

Bit confused with the wording on the VM pricing, can anybody clarify please?

Many thanks

Paul

Hello,

They are talking about physical specs. In your case '4 Physical CPUs' and 8GB usable memory within the ESX host.

If you have 12 GB of memory, 4 of that will NOT be usable with ESX installed.

You can have as many VMs as will fit into 8GBs of memory less what the SC and vmkernel takes.

Best regards,

Edward

Hi thanks for the reply, it was this document that lead me to ask this question, but it looks like it is what it says on the tin, 8GB max.

Thanks

That's basically why the Starter edition is much cheaper and affordable for smaller installations. It's a good entry level product with alot of the ESX features and benefits but just not as scalable as the other editions.
