ESX 3.5U4 Upgrade and Issues Thread

Hi all,

Now that U4 has come out, has anyone had a chance to be a guinea pig and test it - have you had any issues, bugs, or weird stuff happen? (well, a lot of weird stuff happens with ESX. It is just a matter of degree Smiley Happy).

I can confirme that ist`s running OK on ESX an ESXI. Works better than 3.5U3, fixed some wired HA and DRS issues.

Anyone know if this HP Agent works with U4?

It says it works with U3 and then readme says it will work with ESX 3.0+

Update three ESXi test boxes, all different hardware (dell pe 850, 860, r200) no issues at all. (so far, still going through usual testing).

Update Manager is not picking it up. Anyone else have this problem?

I couldn't create and format a VMFS datastore on my test system through VC 2.5.0 U3

It is a Dell PowerEdge 2850 with RAID 1 and RAID 5. The OS RAID 1 storage came in fine but seeing the disk on RAID 5 required me to install VC 2.5.0 U4 and connect directly to the host.

Not a big deal since we will be updating to VC 2.5 U4 in 3 weeks.

The vCenter server must be updated before updating ESX hosts that it manages or will manage. The older database schema wont know about the new or updated features completely in a new ESX host. It may work for the most part but it's not a good idea.

I will try this tommorrow in my home test lab. Will also see if the u4 update is in VUM at work.

page 3 of http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35/vi3_35_25_compat_matrix.pdf says that 3.5.0 U4 is supported with VC versions 2.5 U2, U3 and U4

There probably are advanced features that need 2.5 U4 but creating VMFS datastores is a basic task.

All five of our ESX servers were upgrade successfully to Update 4 (from 3.5u3). No issues encountered. Prior to the ESX upgrade, u4 for vCenter was applied.

Granted, 'must' wasn't the best choice of words. Rather 'should' would have been prefferable. Imho, just because something is supported, doesn't make it the better way. Note the release timing of vCenter 2.5 update 4 and ESX 3.5 update 4.

Upgraded 6 ESX 3.5 U3 hosts today, with no issues.

The one thing I dislike is VMware not being able to upgrade VMware Tools without a restart to the VM.

No errors or issues.

Updated by Update Manager one host from ESX 3.5 U3 to U4 and it hangs on startup loading the HP agents (8.10). Had to disable the agents to get the server to boot.

Testing another host now to see if its a once off.

No good on the 2nd host. Failed with the same error loading the hpasm agent. This is on HP BL25p G2 (AMD blades).

Attached is the output for anyone who is intrested. I'm going to log a SR with HP Vmware support to see what they come up with.

Thanks!

So the process would be:

1. Install new HP Agents on ESX

2. Update vCenter to U4

3. Apply U4 on ESX.
