ESX 3.5 with SAS-card & eSATA-drive

We have an IBM xSeries 336 server which needs more drive space. This is a test machine so best performance or reliability isn't needed, we just need more space for the virtual machines.

I'm thinking about getting Adaptec RAID 2045 SAS-card and attaching an external eSATA drive to it with mini-SAS to eSATA -cable. Would this work? I know ESX doesn't really support sata but the card at least is on the supported list. Will ESX see the drive as SAS/SCSI or SATA and would I be able to use it as vmfs space?

Thanks.

Hello,

If the SAS/eSATA card is on the HCL and there are no caveats then YES it should work. Verify that the card is on the HCL first.

The card is on the HCL and the only thing mentioned about SATA is this:

NOTE: IDE RAID and SATA RAID are not supported for the VMFS file system.

This implies non-RAID SATA drive is supported for the VMFS file system?
