No it is not. You may be able to use them with the service console for normal filetransfers, but the VMKernel is not capable of using them.

THis is not exactly correct, the key is how is the External Harddrive connected to the chassis. If for example it is connected via a SCSI HBA that is supported by ESX and yes its useable. Some SATA/SAS devices also have supported external interfaces.... If you are discussing USB, then no it is not used by the vmkernel.

You are correct, of course. I assumed that external harddisk refers to an USB connected disk, which is (even though not in datacenters) the most common external drive type. Sorry about that and thanks for correcting!
