ESX 3.5 VLAN

I am having trouble getting our trunk working for our VM Network.

We are using a Foundry swtich but to my knowledge this is using standard trunking protocol.

Problem:

1. if we tag the trunk ports for say VLAN 3 for example and I do not add the VLAN ID to the Virtual port group swtich I can not ping the gateway

2. if we tag the trunk port for VLAN 3 and I do add VLAN ID 3 to the port group virtual swtich, I still can not ping the gateway

3. if we do not tag the physical switch trunk ports and I do not add a VLAN ID to the virtual port group switch then it work fine and I can ping the gateway.

What would be our problem here as I have to setup port groups for 2 VLANs in ESX for our virtual machines ?

Thanks

You could be running into a native vlan. Not sure if that is the same on foundry switches. I would try allowing more than one vlan id on the physical switch port's trunk setings, and then see if one of the vlan IDs work on the vSwitch side.
