ESX 3.5 HP R3000 UPS graceful shutdown

Hi,

we have VMware ESX 3.5 Servers connected to a MSA2000 over FC HP SAN Switches and a HP R3000 UPS with Management Module.

We want to config graceful shutdown for VMs and ESX Servers with the HP R3000 and Management Modul.

- Does this work?

- Have anybody experience with that components?

We tired with the HP Guide, but there are some ESX 2.5 config and screenshots in the documentation and there is no useful checklist what steps have to be done to configure all steps.

kind regards,

Martin

Hello,

If the R3000 is made by APC then you could use PowerChute to do this. Otherwise you will have to get HP to help you with this for direct integration. Another method is to use a Linux/Windows server that acts as the proxy and issues using powershell the appropriate commands to shutdown VMs and hosts when the alarm triggers. The Power Proxy server would be the one that also controls power on, making sure SAN is powered on first, etc.

Hi !

I'm trying exactly the same on my datacenter but I'm a bit confused. I hoped I can call for a shutdown directly form my virtual center, but i don't know if it's better to do this directly with a vmware command or a powershell script (i don't want to use a powerchute script directly on my ESX 3.5).

We have a sumilar UPS setup. We have HP R5500XRs but without the management card. They're attached serially to various ESX hosts, which run HP Power Manager. It's just the Linux version but seems to work just fine.

Then we run agents on everything else physical in each rack and the shutdowns are handled by the ESX server. There is the problem of the UPS manager not knowing which VMs are where, but we have a backup generator so the chances of actually needing the shutdown facility is remote so we haven't looked further into it.

Not sure if Power Manager gives you any more options script wise for VM shutdown but thought i'd throw our setup in here in case it helps anyone.
