ESX 3.5 - HP DL380 loud fans

Hi,

I have recently been tasked with setting up an ESX 3.5 server for a SME who are using a DL380 G3. I have successfully installed ESX3.5 and the HP insight Agents version 8.2.0. and when the server reboots the fans stay at full speed. When I set up 2k3 on a server and install the smartstart the fans usually slow down when the server boots. I have been into HPASMCLI and it reports that the fans are running at 20% 15% and 8% but having worked on servers in the past i dont believe the figures are correct.

Is there a way that I can manually slow down the fans or atleast get the fans to slow down as this is going in a little room next to the main office and I am concerned that in its current state it is going to aannoy the staff

You're options are going to be limited with a server that's likely old enough to be desupported (HP DL380s are on Generation 6 now).

The usual suspects are to apply the latest firmware maintenance CD, then ensure you have the HP Management Agents.

Under ESXi, that means using the special install. Under ESX, that means finding them on the HP support website. You may want to look under a DL380 G4's support page, it's more likely to have current agents.

Had a similar problem a while back. Never resloved it but for a number of reasons including the isolation of the two systems it was not a big issue for us.

Check out the following thread which contains a number of tips.

Hello,

Installing the HP Management Agents shoudl quiet things down. Works for me all the time.
