Disabling nics on ESX

I'm wondering if you can disable nics on an ESX server that will cause a link status event on a cisco switch. We installed 5 new ESX servers in our datacenter and we have some confusion on how they got wired. I know on a windows machine I can disable the nic and then get a down event on the console message. I've tried using ifconfig vmnic# down, but I never get any link status events to show. Any ideas?

In 3.0.0 we had problems disabling nics and found out you could only change duplex settings and not disable them.

I wrote a script changing the duplex settings real quick to make our cisco switches see a failed nic. I no longer have the script.

Why can't you attack the problem from the cisco side? Disable a port and see which one it was.
