Difference between E1000 driver and enhanced vmxnet in ESX 3.5

I notcied that After I applied the latest patches to my 3.5 farm, that there are two options in the network settings area when i add a vmnic to one of my servers. What is the difference between vmxnet enhanced and the "at least on mine" E1000 drivers? Is one merly direct access to the NIC and the other the vmware controlled driver?

vmxnet Enhanced is experimental. It is only supported in Redhat/Suse/Ubuntu Linux guests.

Other than that, you won't be able to use it.

And I have experimented with it, it doesn't seem to offer any improvement in performance in network speed or CPU load.
