DRS and Affinity settings

I have DRS configured on a 2 node ESX cluster

When i create an affinity rule to separate 2 of the VM's which are at the moment on the same box , I understood that would cause a 5 star recommendation and then as the cluster is set to fully automatic it would then vmotion the machine to another box

The machines are both compatible with vmotion and can manually migrate successfully

Have I understood this incorrectly? will it only apply the affinity rules on a reboot ?

It should update, but it may take a few for DRS to realize that it's violating and needs to move it..

Give it some time.
