DING!!! Round 2...Lets get it on!

Shew....ok, what's this?

cant access tty; job control turned off

Mobo: Tyan S2882-D

CPU: Dual/Dual Core Opteron

Mem: 8G

Storage: LSI MegaRaid 300-8XLP

Drives: 6 500GB WD5000YS

VGA: ATI Rage

LAN: 2 10/100/1000 Broadcom, 1 10/100 Intel, 2 10/100/1000 Intel based Riverbed CMP-00028 PCI-X, 2 10/100/1000 Intel based Riverbed CMP-00028 PCI-X

SMDC: Tyan 2839 Daughter Board, BMC FW 01.73, IPMI FW 1.51

During the install I had to specify the Raid driver but it found the Array and I let it configure the layout. I get the above message when I boot into ESX and ESX Debug. I am able to boot without a hitch, into the Service Console Troubleshooting Mode.

In debug mode, I saw that it said that it could not mount root....ill post more info later, i need a break...

Don't know, but do check the firmware of those WD drives.. there's a firmware problem with disks below a certain firmware version where they can drop out of a raid set.

See WD YS firmware upgrade

For a 500GB disk the minimum firmware version on your disk should be: Revision 09.02E09

Checked the drives, they are fine...

Anyone else? Ive done a bit of searching and while it seems to be somewhat of a common occurance, I have yet to find anything in the right direction...

Can you ssh into the machine?

Have you taken a look at the logfiles in /var/log (tip: if you can't get in then try a knoppix CD or something like that)

If the system cannot mount the root partition i try a reinstall as the first thing.

Currently your error message isn't really that helpful (hey i have no screen... guess what my problem is...)

Hey wila, yeah, like I said I can boot perfectly fine into the "Service Console (troubleshooting)" Label which is the standard Linux in previous versions of ESX. I will post some logs.....

Hey guys, in an effort to get some relevent logs, I too the following steps

1. I went in and cleared dmesg, /var/log/message and like 4 other log files.

2. I rebooted the machine and let it boot to the error message.

3. I waited 10 min so that there would be a noticable gap in the logs.

4. I rebooted into the troubleshooting mode.

5. I went into the logs and NOTHING was logged from the time I booted up in the normal mode, the only logs that were there were from the time i booted up in troubleshooting mode.

What do i need to do?

Reinstall ESX and keep your vmfs partitions if you already have some?

Um, the error you mentioned in the OP, is explained here and here too

This together with your other problems leads me to think that ESX isn't able to mount the disk properly. Did you specify custom partitioning?

It does sound as if ESX didn't install a vmkernel device driver for your disk controller. The initial ESX installation works because at that point it's just a standard RedHat kernel running (and standard Linux device drivers work) but once you boot into a vmkernel-enabled mode, the drivers that get loaded up in the initrd image either 1) aren't present for your controller, or 2) don't work with your card.

Can you boot into the Service Console Troubleshooting mode and post the output of:

lspci

lspci -v

lsmod

cat /etc/vmware/esx.conf

We may have to make some changes to get the ESX vmkernel to "see" your specific adapter.

A quick glance of the HCL shows that this specific card isn't present. In other words, "recognition" of it hasn't been included into the vmkernel disk device driver configuration files.

Along the same lines, though, support for the 150-4, 150-6 and 300-x cards isn't present on the HCL but they generally can be made to work by adding the PCI bus/slot/function ID into the device mapping files for ESX. These adapters typically use the megaraid driver.

Once you've posted the output from the above commands, we can take this further.

Regards,

Paul

Hey wila, no I let it do all of the partitioning, in fact it was a very bland install and I can boot into standard linux just fine...although I have noticed that kudzu finds and configures the same hardware each time. I will check out those links now.

Hey Paul, thanks for chiming in, rest assured that I will not make the same mistake twice :). Yeah, during the install it didn't detect the raid card so I manually added the megaraid driver and that's when it saw the array - anyway here is the info you asked for, and thanks again Paul.

anyway, here is the output of those commands:

Well...all I have to say is that I am one happy little fella!

As usual Paul, what can I say? Thanks a million again....because of your advice I know have a fully functional ESX server.

What I did was edit the esx.cfg, pci.xml, and vmware-devices.map files located in the /etc/vmware directory and change the device number from 0407 to 0409 for all LSI devices and then run the following:

esxcfg-boot -p

esxcfg-dddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddipppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
