Copying a VM from version 2.0 to my ESX 3.5 Cluster

Hi

We have a legacy VMware server which is running version 2.0 - it's the old web interface and I don't know too much about it. I wanted to get the VMs from that server to our ESX 3.5 cluster, so I copied the whole VM's directory over to the 3.5 datastore, right clicked the vmx file and it added itself to the inventory ok, but the VM is greyed out, and says "invalid" and there's nothing I can do.

Is this a compatiability issue between the two? Is there anything I can do here?

You have 2 options:

1. VMWare converter.

2. VMKFSTools to import the VM

I persponally go with option 2, but option 1 is easier to follow (in most cases)

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

the quickest and easiest thing to do is run vConverter against this machine to import it into your virtual infrastructure

Thanks, that's great - I've converted the VM using converter and it all seems happy.
