Consolidation

Hi

Just updated to VC 2.5, and wanted to try out Consolidation.

Add'ed 5 servers, and all 5 have detected the hardware (cpu info and mem). but have for 24+ hours been "Preparing for analysis"

Any advice

Regards

Michael

Is the VC a member of an Active Directory or in a workgroup.

I remember reading about the limitations of this feature and basically everything should be in the same domain.

Well

The VC server is a part of the AD, and so it the servers. The user I'm using is a Domain Administrator.

At first I did use a account that was not an domain admin, and got errors on that, changed user and got able to get past that "credintials error". the Consolidation service is also running as an domain admin

It's like the connection between VC and Consolidation is missing. whar using "vcpDataMgr.exe" and looking under "Admin -> Options" there is no "Global Connection Account"

After uninstalling the Consolidation. the setup on the VC 2.5 CD tell me that ALL is installed (but Consolidation is removes, same after reboot)

Installing it manually installs it into a diffrent dir.

how to fix that, if thats the problem ?

Hi Steendp

Try to repair your installation via Control Panel.

After this look in your logs located in Documents and Setting\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Capacity Planner\Logs

You can change the level of logging via Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VMware Capacity Planner\vcpDataMgr.exe

Then post some info. Probably you collector not collecting anything

To be precise, you had got MsJet errors on 9th Jan.

01-09-2008 12:52:16:0:1984: ERROR: An unexpected error occurred! Module = vcpInventory Function = UpdateTask:12 Source = Microsoft JET Database Engine Error = Syntax error in UPDATE statement.(-2147217900:0:5003144)

At the moment you are not receiving any errors - as it come from the logs you have posted (Compacting Database entries). Try to change log level.

It is a pity, but consolidation feature is not well ducumented.

However, I supose you might face the following:

Capacity Planner cache problems. Try to purge CP cache and its access database. You can do it via Capacity Manager.

Connectivity and security issues. Check firewall settings and remote services (remote registry, server, check your admin "$" shares - ipc$ might be crucial).

What are the accounts you used to run Capacity Planner Service? Check credentials required to access remote hosts (candidates). Check to make sure that your CP service account have access to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib\009 key - The Performance counters are located in it. Add the Capacity Planner service account to the Performance Log Users and Performance Monitor Users groups on all candidates. You may want to apply this on the domain controllers, as well. Restart the Remote Registry Service on candidates, you may want to restart it on DC as well. After performing the above steps it may be necessary to rebuild the WMI performance libraries on any affected Windows servers by issuing commands

wmiadap /C

wmiadap /f

Once done, reboot each candidate.

What are your default and active international settings on the VC? I used Polish as default. After reinstalling of VC using US English as default and active settings all problems gone. I know that is not elegant approach and IMHO, last resort activity. That is why I have put it at the end.

Good luck,

greetz,

Same issue, changing regional settings to English (United States) works for me.

Hmm, after uninstalling, changing to US, and reinstalling.

I'm no longer able to see "Consolidation manager" from VI Smiley Sad

How to get it back into VI ?

Try installing it from the CD, in the folder VPX/CapacityPlanner.exe

Trying to run the autorun from the CD just tells me that All Vmware infrastructure management components are installed.

and when running VPX/CapacityPlanner.exe, it will only remove or install (without asking anything)

I've all but given up with Consolidator - I've tried almost everything (haven't done a complete re-install yet !).

I raised an SR and was asked to check my plugins - I pointed out that Consolidator was not a plugin and I've not heard anything since.... and that was two weeks ago !

If you manage to get to the point where Consolidator appears in your VI Client please post how you did it so I can get it working too.

Complete reinstall was the only way I could figure to solve this issue... make sure to backup your vc db first!!!

Problem is solved Smiley Wink

Just change (on server to be analyzed) "Decimal symbol" to "." instead of ";" and everything will be fine!

I don't even know what you're talking about... change what "decimal" to a "semi-colon"? I am confused.

In Windows - "Control Panel" - "Regional and Language Setting" - "Customize", check "Decimal symbol:" and "Digit grouping symbol:"

If you are running English US as regional settings, the defaults should be correct.

Hi Oliver,

Under English - UK the settings are, by default, Decimal Symbol = "." & Digit Grouping Symbol = ","

Does this mean that I too should be ok? I only ask because I to am suffering from issues.

What is really bizzarre is that we have a "test" VC server with the exact same configuration (a vm as it happens) in the same domain, configured exactly as the production version is, the vm vc server can see the the domain servers and analyze, but as this vc server is not managing the esx cluster it cannot continue with the planning of consolidation, but the physical vc server just stops on "preparing for analysis" having looked at this further the only thing that appears different in the gui is that when I open the "Add to analysis" box on the VM vc server there are IP addresses against the physical server names, but not on the "master" physical vc server. Do you rthink that it is having some resolution issues that may be causing a conflict somewhere?

Any help would be great

Ta

Will.
