Cheapest PCI Gigabit NIC usable in whitebox setup?

I'm looking to set up a very cheap lab environment to get my hands dirty with ESX3.5 including vmotion and need to upgrade the nic's to gigabit but am having trouble finding pci (not pci-x or pci-e) nic's that have been shown to work even when they aren't on the HCL. I see from the unofficial hcl list http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3.5/Whiteboxes_SATA_Controllers_for_ESX_3.5_3i.htm that the Intel Pro/1000 GT works but that the desktop version has caused problems for other users on this forum. http://communities.vmware.com/message/673054#673054

Does anyone know a pci gigabit card that is suitable?

I've had good luck with Intel Pro/1000 MT's... got mine for about $12 on eBay.
