PLease take it easy on me, I am new the VM world.
ESX version 3.5.0
VMWare Infrastructure Client version = 2.5.0
The problem occured after a power outage, being that the ESX server is in a test enviroment we do not have any UPS attached to it. Anyway after the power outage, I can not restart the VM's. When I right click on any VM, my only selections are Snapshot, Open Console and Report Performance. How do I turn these VMs back on????
is the ESX server responding within the virtual center mgmt console
can you access the VMFS LUNS /Storage area ?
sounds to me like you have a permissions problem if you are getting limited access to the VM's
try this : open virtual center and connect to the esx host (not the Virtual Center Server) login as root, are you able to power the vms on now?
Please remember that I am new the VM world. I am not sure twhat the virtual center is . I can connect with the VMware Infrastructure Client, but can not start VMs
Have you tried a clean restart of your ESX server? With your power outage there still might be some file locks that you will need to clear.

VirtualCenter = Centralized View of your ESX nodes... you use the same client to connect to it....
so if you were connecting to a VirtualCenter server, you would be pointing your VI Client to a windows box (where virtualcenter is installed) and logging in, then seeing all of your esx hosts ....
with a stand alone VI Client, you point the client directly at a single esx host....
I would think this is a "30,000 foot level" Description ? :smileycool:
You can use the virtual infrastructure client to connect to your esx server, type the ip or hostname of your esx server where you would normally have the name of your virtual center server. Login as user = root
Failing that try using the web front end
Try to SSH to the ESX Host the VM's are on and login as root. Then run the following command ps auxfww | grep <vmname>. This should then return the PID of the vm's name you entered. If it does return the PID of a vm you can't start then issue a kill -9 PID of VM
You will need to do this for each VM you cant start.

check to see if your license is active and showing, you cannot staty a guest if your license is expried
do not get a PID
If you cant connect using the management console, ssh to the esx server and restart the management service
service mgmt-vmware restart
I am sorry everyone, when I connect to my ESX server using the VI client (version 2.5.0) , my only selections are Snapshot, Open Console and Report Performance for each of my VMs.
Again I apologize for using the word "restatrt"
pgramling - Have you checked the license info under configurtaion-License Feature. If that is fine you could try removing the vm from the inventory then adding it back in.

I am using the 60-trial version with 29 days left.
When files are in use they are locked to
prevent modifying by anything else. In a VMFS volume sometimes these
files stay locked even when they are not in use (possibly when a VM was
not stopped properly). To fix this you need to release the lock on the file.
Please see this to identify if this is the problem and follow it through to fix it. Certainly sounds like the problem.
