Can't re-scan for LUN, unless reboot the host

Hey everyone.

I have this issue that I am not able to figure out. I have 2 SANs. Hitachi 9585 and Hitachi USP VM. I went to add a lun to a host one from each of the SANs. When I add a lun from the 9585 and re-scan, the HBAs see the LUN without any problems. When I do the same on the USP VM, the hosts don't the see the LUN after a re-scan. Only a reboot of the ESX host will make it see the LUN. I have spoken to Hitachi, several levels of support, and no one can help me. They don't know why this is. Has any one here had a problem like this. I am running ESX 3.5.

Thanks all.

I have seen this on the EMC DMX. There is a bit you need to set (on the DMX LUN) to make it work with a rescan. Check the SAN config guide -> http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_san_cfg.pdf Starts on Pg 65.

You should try the command line in the SSH to do the rescan.

I have tried the vmksftools -s vmhba... command. It doesn't help either.

This should be the command

esxcfg-rescan vmhba4

Have your tried with "esxcfg-rescan" command?

In VC gui try to rescan only "Scan for new storage devices".

Have you checked the /var/log/vmkernel file for any messages after rescanning?

Esxcfg-rescan doesn't help me. Still can't see the LUN. I will check the logs now.

We have the exact same issue. Did you ever find a resolution?

Hi,

I realise that this is quite an old post but I'm having exactly the same issue here.

We have two IBM 3690's running ESXi 4.1 with HBA's installed in them.  Our Storage guy has provision a 40GB LUN, (for testing), so that both servers can see it but rescans cant pick it up.  Only a reboot of the server will, (tried this on one of them).

The common factor seems to be that the storage is an Hitachi USP SAN.

Any one ever have a resolution to this?

Thanks,

Hi,

We had the same issue with LSI SAS Storage Array. While troubleshooting this issue we found that LSI SAS HBA drivers are not updated with VMware ESX. So downloaded the required SAS HBA drivers from VMware  and updated using esx-update command. Now the issue solved. Whenever we rescan the hba its seeing the newly mapped luns.

It may help you.

Thanks,
