Dear all,
we are running ESX 3.01 on our SunFire X4200 and are not able to
install any guest system because the CD-ROM device is not accessible.
During every boot attempt ESX is saying "can't locate module ide-cd".
Is there any chance to postinstall this module?
THX,
Rainer
If you can't get it working you can use your client machine's CD-drive, or convert the CD/DVD to an ISO and upload it to either the /vmimages or a VMFS volume on your ESX host using SCP. You can then connect the VM directly to the ISO.
@mittel:
THX, but what do you mean by "you can use your client machine's CD-drive".
I have only 1 SunFire X4200 system under ESX 3.01 where I want one VM under Fedora 7.
Therefore I set the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM first and configured the virtual CD-ROM to
use Host Drive and to be connected at power on.
But this didn't work.

I mean you can put the Fedore 7 CD in the CD-drive on the machine you are running the VI client on to connect to the ESX host. Edit settings, select use client device, and it'll pass-through from your client to the VM.
