Can someone please tell me what the belltest02esx:storage1 volume is for?

The one highlighted in bold? anything in /vmfs/volumes are going to be your datastores, whether local or shared.

How should we know? That can be a LUN, iSCSI or NFS device.

Have you checked via the vSphere client which LUN's the host can see and if there are NFS or iSCSI devices attached?

There's a VMFS volume on, so somebody must have created it.

Assuming "belltest02esx" is the name of the ESX(i) host, "storage1" most likely refers to the local datastore.

Using the vSphere client, in the configuration tab select storage and click on the available datastores. In the lower pane you should be able to see the corresponding UUID.
