Backup to Fiber Tape device directly from VM - ASAP!

Hi all,

I'm trying to install a StorageTek 9940b Tape library on my ESX host. I want to my VMs see the tape library.

I read the this is possible after Rescan the storage and after add a SCSI device to my VM to see it. But I even can't see it on my ESX after scanning.

Does anyone know how can I acomplish this?

Please, this is very Urgent!

Thanks !

It's still a no go in 3.X. Support is coming for this, but not until the end of the year I think.

Have you configured your zoning so that the ESX host will be able to see the tape library?

fiber attached Tape library's are not supported under ESX 2.5 and I have not seen anything different for 3.x.

you will need a physical fiber attached host to control the library.

You can attach a locally attached SCSI device to a vm, but not Fiber.

No.. didn''t configured any zone, it is plugged on the same adapter as my SAN.

Is it supported or not?

I saw many posts that people did that before..

If you use a physical host you can use VCB to mount the vmfs and back it up. You cannot add an HBA to a VM and so it cannot talk to the Tape library over the fabric.

I am pretty positive it is not possible at this time and especially since kix also agree's and he works for PHD who's whole product is around backup and restore of VM's.
