Adding/extending Datastore in ESXI 3.5u4 (3.5.0,169697) version.

I have a SCSI LUN setup for 207gb. I have a Datastore named XYZ on that LUN @32gb. When I go to add storage (a datastore), the Disk/LUN selection screen is blank and never returns the aforementioned LUN to select. This is the evaluation version of the ESXI Server.

I am also unable to extend the XYZ 32gb Extent larger to accomodate other VM's storage on the same datastore. I have tried to extend or create with the VM disconnected. The VM is not on while I am trying to do this.

I keep thinking that somehow I have to dis-associate this Datastore to the VM it belongs to, then extend it, then re-associate it without LOSING any data that is contained on that Datastore. I am unfamiliar with VMware to do this or how to proceed to use the extra ~187gb space for other VM storage. The documentation of course always works in a perfect world.

You can't have 2 extents in the same device and can't expand an existing datastore without using extents. I suggest you convert the VM to a local storage (like as a VMWare Workstation VM), erase your datastore and re-add it again. Convert the VM back and I believe the job will be done.

So what you are telling me, when a VM is created and the Datastores

that it uses are on 2 differents luns (lun 0 has the guest os, and lun 1

has the seperate disk/guest os partition), you cannot extend one datastore

or the other?

No, that's not what I said. If you have 2 LUNs WITH datastores, you cannot unite them in 1. If you have 1 LUN with datastore and another empty LUN, you can add the empty one as an extent of the other one.

But you can't have 2 datastores into 1 LUN, or have 1 datastore in half a LUN and add the unpartitioned space as an extent to it.
