Adding additional memory to server.

I currently have a Dell PowerEdge 6800 with 32gb of memory running ESX 3.5. We just purchased memory to to increase to 64gb. Will ESX automatically see the increase or do I have to make changes?

thx

Just add the memory to your server. ESX will see the additional memory without any changes needed after startup.

From your question I make the assumption that you have no cluster setup and only 1 stand-alone host

If you have your server down for adding the memory, make sure you check your BIOS if Intel VT and NX/XD is enabled.

I don't have experience with Dell, but on my HP boxes these settings are not enabled by default. That way you don't run into problems later on when you want to upgrade to a cluster setup and maybe want to take advantage of EVC.

VT is also required to run 64bit guests.

It is the same with dell both disabled by default. Also make sure you follow the dell instructions for installing the RAM in order. Do not just fill up the available slots with the RAM.

On our 2950's the process was populate slots 1 - 3, 2-4, 5-7, 6-8 in that order.
