I need to add a 3rd SCSI controller to a VM running on ESX 3.5 but don't get the option to add an additional SCSI Device. The VM is off and the "SCSI Device" option says (unavailable). When I select it, the information box says: This device cannot be added to this Virtual Machine because: There are no non-disk SCSI devicesavailable on the host.
My understanding of the maximums for ESX 3.5 is that it can have up to 4 virtual SCSI controllers. Is there something I'm missing that is preventing me from getting the option to install another SCSI controller? I've search the forums but only see advice on adding the second controller, which didn't really require much action.
How many virtual NICs does your VM have - under 3.5 the maximum number of virtual PCI cards is 5 so you can have any combination of vNICs or vSCSI cards as long their individual total is not greater than 4-
Thanks for responding. The VM has 1 vNIC and 2 SCSI Controllers. I need to add 2 more SCSI Controllers to the VM.
Does the 3rd SCSI controller just show up once the 2nd SCSI controller is 100% utilized? I believe that's how the 2nd controller showed up.
Hi
You cannot manually add a SCSI controller.
When you add a new vdisk, the step after you selected the size and location, you need to specify "Virtual device node" select this as SCSI(3:0) and a 3rd SCSI controller will automatically be created

I hope this helps, Please assign points if you find this helpfull or correct
Just to add
"Virtual device node" SCSI(3:0) where 3 is the SCSi controller (1-4) and 0 is the SCSI node (0-14)
So adding another vdisk with SCSI (4:0) will create the forth SCSI controller
The will give you 1 NIC and 4 SCSI wich is 5 PCI devices and the limit reached.
