Adding USB hard drive to VM

How do i add a USB external harddrive to my VM? I need the backup files form the USB drive to do recovery on the VM.

ESX does not support USB devices within VMs. There are a number of posts on the topic if you search the forums. You will have to think of an alternative using some form of network storage as middle ware or if you are truly set on having the USB device in the VM you can try http://www.usb-over-network.com/
