Adding New Host

We are getting ready to add a third host to our site and needed to find out what things i really need to look harder at. First time addind a host solo so i'm trying to be cautious. Currently we have 2 hosts running ESX 3.5 U4 and my guess is the new software license is going to be 4.0 (VSphere). Am i going to need to upgrade both currents to 4.0 prior to adding the host or can that be done afterwards. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks for the time.

you can downgrade the license to VI3 and you shouldn't have any problems. If you want to upgrade to vSphere4, then you'll have to upgrade your vCenter instance first because 2.5 cannot manage ESX(i)4 Hosts.

The only weird issue i've seen with 3.x Hosts and 4.x hosts is what is talked about in the KB article.

Finally, if you are going to have a mix of ESX hosts, you will need to keep your license server in tact for the 3.x stuff

Good Luck!

You'll need to upgrade the VirtualCenter server to vCenter 4.0 before adding a 4.0 host, but the existing hosts can stay at 3.5U4.
