vmnic # assignment

Hi,

How does ESX -during install- determine which physical NIC will be what vmnic number? I was in the assumption that vmnic0 would always be the first internal NIC, but after a clean install of ESX 3.5 I found out that the first add-in NIC has become vmnic0, which leaves me kind of confused...

Regards,

Raymond

As already stated it is based on the PCI address of the nic. You should know that the NIC you choose for console during the installation will become vmnic0 no matter

what address it has.

I beleive it uses the PCI bus addresses.

Lowest to highest.

At least that's what I was told.

This is correct. The assignment is based on the bus slot and function address assigned by the motherboard/BIOS at boot time.
