The VMware Infrastrucure s/w can not (?) create a host on the machine where Infrastructure is installed.

So VIC needs to be installed on a machine where virtual servers will not be installed? So really two physical boxes are need then correct?

Are you using VMware ESX? You would need one host on which you would install ESX and you can't run the VI client on that host at the console. You would need another host / PC on which you would install the VI client. You could then configure the ESX host and add VMs. You could then install the VC Client (and VirtualCenter server if you plan on using it) in a VM on the ESX host and manage the server from the VM.

You only need a single ESX host as a minimum to run virtual machines.

Install ESX on a server, then configure the server using the VI client running on a workstation. You can download the client from the ESX host by entering the IP/name of the ESX server into a browser.

Then build the VM's
