Running Virtual Center 2.01, I get a "invalid or unknown locale provided" when starting the VI Client. This happens both on the Virtual Center server Win2003 server and at my WinXP PC. The only way to get around it that I've found is to start Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Regional Options and change Standards and formats to English (United States). No other regional settings affect the error or is needed[/b]. After I successfully log on to the Virtual Infrastructure Client, I can change back to "Norwegian (Bokmal)" and live happily ever after.
The following threads describe the same problem, and a possible solution.

When I check the loc2iso.vlcl file, it already has a line 'Norwegian (Bokmål)_Norway = "no_NO"'. I also tried adding 'Norwegian (Bokmal)_Norway = "no_NO"' to the file and restart the 'VMware VirtualCenter Server' service, but then it fails to start (reboot doesnt help).
Anyway, the point is its pretty annoying having to change to english (US) 'Standards and formats' every time I start the VI client. Is there a better way to fix this, as I'm about to distribute the VI client to all of the VM admins in my organization?
.....
Replace the contents of your loc2iso.vlcl file on the VC2.0 server with this (remember a backup):
Then set your VC 2.0 server to Norwegian Bokmaal etc. and restart (same fix MAY apply to other languages than Norwegian Bokmaal).
.....
Did you set VC server to Norwegian after changing the file?
Yes, I tried starting the VMware Virtual Center Server service with the Norwegian (Bokmal) set. Service didnt start. The problem isnt starting the vmware service, its the VI client that fails.
Another strange thing, after I added and removed[/b] 'Norwegian (Bokmal)_Norway = "no_NO"' to the loc2iso.vlcl, the service still wouldnt start until I put back the original file. Verified 2 times
So that goes as a warning, dont ever change that file without taking a backup of it first.
Hi!
Beeing a norwegian as well i'we had the same problem. I think you need to set the locales to english before installing VC. Allso remember that the locales follow the user(profile) you use. Try deleting the profile, og create a new adminaccount, after changing the locales and reboot. (remember the "apply setting to current user and default user profile" checkbox)
Edidting the configfile only affects the client, enabling you to run from a computer with norwegian locales set, i think.
Hi
If you open the loc2iso.vlcl file in wordpad, NOT notepad
You will see that its not an "Ã¥" there.
Erase all the funny characters restart and your done
(You should be able to install vcenter in both Norwegian env and english environment..
After you have erased the funny characters you have to write in å instead..sorry, for leaving that out
Solved!

I had to apply the fix described in this KB, uninstall the VC client, set locale to Norwegian (bokmal) and then reinstall the VI client. The KB says the problem was fixed in patch 1. Patch 1 was the first version of VC2 I installed, and I had the same problem on Patch 2 until I did this.
