This is very likely due to the removal of support for many cpu's between 6.5 and 6.7 ESXI. I believe in some cases you may get an error message and installation will fail indicating an unsupported CPU. In my case, on several of my (older) systems, installation would simply hang at vmkernel initialization with no warning or indication. Trying to boot on the same system from an already installed boot device (USB) also caused it to hang at the vmkernel initialization. After some digging, I realized most of my homelab hardware is now too old for VMWare 6.7.
