esxupdate - system impact question

I am experimenting ESX patch management on an host without an VM on there for learning purposes.

When installing an update which System Impact is set to "No VM Shutdown & No Host Reboot" still shutdown hostd service.

What is the impact of restarting the hostd service? In my experience it does shutdown the VMs.

Restarting the hostd service shouldn't reboot the guests. What you're experienceing is probably a bug where shutting down hostd w/ auto-start/shutdown enabled reboots the hosts. The bug is actually fixed in a patch. If you turn off auto-start/shutdown and try the process again does it still reboot your vms?

Hello Dominic,

Thanks for your reply. Actually I assumed it would reboot the VMs since I tested restarting vmware-hostd service on a 3.0.1 host and all VM were shutdown.

This server I am testing with now does not have any VM and is running 3.0.2 , I will test this again with some VM on there.

Do you have the KB # by any chance for that bug you mentionned?

Thanks.

I don't have a kb #, but here is the patch that should solve the problem:

h3. Resolved Issues
This patch fixes an issue where restarting the mgmt-vmware service
can cause an unexpected reboot of virtual machines that are configured
to automatically start or stop.

Thanks. This is probably the problem I had the other time that made me think VM would reboot now...

I could not really find any documentation to know if it was expected or not.
