I have gotten a bit behind in keeping my VMware ESX 3.0.1 hosts patched and I was wondering if all of the patches need to be applied before updating the hosts to 3.0.2? I know this is probably a silly question but ya never know these days. I ran a 'vmware -v' on all my hosts and I have 6 hosts at VMware ESX Server 3.0.1 build-47426 and 2 hosts at VMware ESX Server 3.0.1 build-44686. I am trying to remember where I left off at on my patching and I think the hosts at 47426 are patched up to the September 6, 2007 patches and the 2 at 44686 are patched up to the Sept 6 patches but do not have those installed. I am seriously considering getting Virtual Center upgraded to Virtual Center 2.0.2 Update 1 over the next couple of days and then start getting my hosts updated to ESX Server 3.0.2 Update 1 over the next few weeks. As long as there won't be issues with a 2.0.2 Virtual Center managing a mix of 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 hosts. Any suggestions, warnings, etc?
I did like you suggested and browsed to my virtual center server but all I have is graphics....no text...no links....I restarted the webservice but it didn't fix the issue. I was able to get the exe for the client from the directory on the virtual center server....just thought this was odd.

Install 3.0.2 and then look at the patches and install what you need for that version

Hi,
I use a tool called VMTS. This tool can update all your 3.0.1 or 3.0.2 esx host. Now, your question is do you have to patch first to get to 3.0.2. No, just do the upgade and then do the patching to your servers. Be prepared to put your esx host into Maintance Mode when doing your patching and then rebooting them.
Hope that helped.
Thanks for the replies guys...what about Virtual Center? If I go ahead and upgrade it to 2.0.2 Update 1 will I still be able to manage both 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 hosts?
Yes there will be no problem
cool deal...thanks again guy...have a good one
By the way, Make sure you update your VC Clients when you upgrade Virtual Center. This you have to do. All you need to do is open your browser, type the name of the Virtual center, and download the VMWare Infrastructure Client.
Hope that helped. Award Points
