ESX3.5. VMking ping is not working when assign a VLAN ID to the VMkernal port for Vmotion. I cannot even ping the default gateway when i assign a VLAN ID. Tried esxcfg-route <ip addr> & does not let me ping the default gateway after. However by removing the VLAN ID vmkping works. Service console, production and VC are on a different subnets also no vSwitches are shared
Is there anything wrong with leaving the vmkernel port for Vmotion with no VLAN ID?
Or how else can i configure it?
It sounds like the VSTs(virtual Switch Tags) are being stripped at the switch. so you have one of two choices, firstly talk to the Network team and get them to pass the VLAN tags into the ESX server, or create a seperate vSwitch for each traffic type (pNICS dependent)

As Tom say, you have to configure also your physical switch.
