VMotion and CPU compatibility

Before I begin trying to decypher the different CPU types, speeds and options to determine which machines are compatible with other machines for VMotionability I figured I try the forums to see if anyone out there might be able to tell me, based on experience, if HP DL 580 G4's with 2 dual core CPU's (3Ghz) are VMotion compatible with the new HP DL580 G5's with 2 Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® X7350 Processor 2.93 GHz CU's.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Peter

You just need to check the compatibility matrix, it isn't that difficult. Check the proc's that run on one system, and then the other, and see if they line up or not.

The DL580 G4 and G5's are not VMotion compatible; the G5 introduced the new, post-Netburst processors, which are - fortunately and unfortunately - completely different from the old ones.

HP publishes a reasonably detailed VMotion compatibility chart on the same page they present their certification matrixes on: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/software/vmware/hpvmwarecert.html
